Just one thing I wanted to draw attention to. (HOF THREAD)

This little hair-on-fire, days-long dramafest started because a thread was hidden due to the use of a homophobic/ misogynistic insult.

We saw a lot more shit follow that - 'sissies', 'knickers in a twist', portraying anyone who might have a problem with it as a woman (an old woman, of course), etc.

Then there were a bunch of posts about the c-word, and now I just saw one with 'cumdumpster'.

It's just interesting to me how this bullshit morphed so quickly from HELP HELP THE RUDE ONE IS BEING OPPRESSED! SAVE HIM FROM THE PRUDE WORD POLICE AAAAAA! and FIRST AMENDMENT!! FREE SPEECH!! CENSORSHIP!!!! SQUAAAAWK!!! into just how much hateful bigoted shit about women can I post without getting a hide?!

Your opinion about the alert and the jury's decision are fucking immaterial.

If you have nothing to say about the issue I raised in the OP... well that would not be surprising. Not one fucking bit.

Don't you feel sorry for those left behind? The ones that don't understand social evolution much less social revolution? I kinda do, a little. Except, by the time they realize they're antiquated and foolish, they can't change or approach an idea from a different view.

Just read "The Geranium" by Flannery O'Conner. Reminds me of those types. In this case, the protagonist was an old man--country boy, who moved to New York with his daughter. He reminisces about the later part of his life, and dislikes all the changes he sees. When he sees that a well dressed black man can live in the same apartment building, he almost loses it. When the black man kindly helps him up after a fall and calls him "oldtimer", he is beyond insulted.

Yet, he is also powerless, and lives with the frustration of the powerless. The geranium in the story isn't his-- a man in apartments across the way sets it out in the sun every day. It reminds the old man of his roots. When the geranium falls from the window, the old man gets angry and tells the owner to pick it up. The tells him 'you pick it up'

But the old man can't. There are too many steps and too many changes. The story ends.

The world was a slower place back then. This is the age of information and these people have lived in it for two decades now. There is no longer any excuse for anyone with access to the internet to be so backwards.

In the story, the old man wasn't a sexist he was a racist-- he saw blacks as less then human, even though in his pre New York days he had a buddy he'd go often hunting with who was black. In his mind-- they weren't even friends, because blacks and whites were never friends.

In New York, his time was past. Like it's (far too slowly) going past the sexist morons, or the idiots who think words don't matter

Our primary communication tool? The way we describe, sometimes inadvertently our culture? Words don't matter? No big deal? Just say anything, anywhere, anytime? They don't matter?

The reason I used the story kind of an allegory for the situation here was to show how words do matter, especially when someone pays attention to what they're saying, and uses them to make a point, not just a half incoherent pissed off rant

I don't mind cuss words. I use them a lot.

But I do mind hurting people who have been objectified, degraded or hurt by "words" and it's very easy not to do it by choosing different ones.

there are also the, "Anyone who disagrees with me is censoring me and burning books and really, really being MEAN to me, and now I have no FREE SPEECH!!!!" sentiments.

And the saddest/funniest part of it all is that about 90% of them don't have any idea that they are so clearly stating these things.

Now I feel like taking a shower. I truly think that was the most vile, woman-hating thread I've ever read on DU. This place has gone to hell. Did respond to several of the posts, not that it will do any good but I wanted to provide some backup.

Even the gutter would have spit out this thread. The jury system is a joke.

Some people are really, really invested in their "right" to face no pushback or consequences when calling a woman any slur they wish to. And yes, it's like children pushing the boundaries- how much can I get away with, and if they can't, then wahh- you're picking on me!
