Just maybe arming teachers and other staff in schools isn't a good idea...

or police for that matter...

Lloyd police officer who fired gun in Highland NY High School resigns
after investigation finds him at fault

HIGHLAND, N.Y. — Sean McCutcheon, the resource officer who fired a shot from his service weapon in a hallway at Highland High School, has resigned from the Lloyd Police Department after an investigation concluded the incident, though unintentional, was due to “officer error,” the department said on Friday.

McCutcheon, a retired New Paltz police officer who had been the resource officer at Highland High School since early this year, was placed on leave while Lloyd police investigated the March 5 incident.

A single shot was fired from McCutcheon’s department-issued Glock 45 pistol at 1:38 p.m. that day as he was on foot patrol in a hallway at the school, police said at the time.

Lloyd police said on Friday that their investigation concluded McCutcheon had a “lapse in judgment, unsecured his duty weapon and, in doing so, inadvertently discharged one round from his weapon into the floor.”

McCutcheon was an active-duty Lloyd police officer who worked in the Highland schools through an agreement between the town and the district.

But somehow more 'guns!!!' is 'the only answer' to better safety.

Guns are treated as just another consumer product when they should be regarded as serious tools for killing. Soldiers learn to respect their weapons.

By the regulations they signed up under, they are only to use them under orders passed down with deliberation in a war zone, not a school, not a neighborhood, not because they are ticked off.

Despite failures in the application of deadly force and theft, and other disclaimers to their regulation in the military, I suggest that civilians take the possession and use of guns just as seriously as soldiers and not as hobbies or status symbols.

What could possibly go wrong when a well-meaning teacher is distracted, while armed with a gun, and a 15-year old comes up from behind and takes away the teacher's Glock?

What could possibly go wrong?

Thank goodness no one got hurt that time.

But
Many (not most, but significant number of) tragic gun deaths are accidental, many of them children or teens.

Thus dis-proving "only criminals shoot people with guns" meme.
