A word about JPR...

This is in response to many posters' comments in the following thread regarding the structure of JPR:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1280&pid=149191

I agree that the format over there is awkward. One of (few) posts I made there was to ask for tips on finding my way around easier. Like merrily says, it takes time. I've been a star member of DU for over a decade, and I remember way back when that DU's format was as unfriendly as JPR's. But DU's format has improved over the years, and I expect JPR's will as well. That's why I joined over there, and then donated so the administrators there could keep improving the site.

It's rather like dual citizenship. That's a hot topic in our household right now since we live near the Canadian border, and are preparing for a possible Trump presidency...

1. So the format is as confusing as I thought?

It's not just me.

I haven't joined yet because .. for example it seems like one can only reply to the OP. Is that right?

Sometimes the problem is figuring out who is talking to who and what order things are said.

...but like I said in the OP, early DU had problems, and that was a big one here.

14. If you use "Hybrid Mode", listed under the display options,

you'll see the posts in the order of who is replying to who. Without the "nesting" being obvious it's hard to notice that. Though with Hybrid you can see the nesting in miniature form.

"Reply with quote" can help if you want to make it clear who you are talking to.

16. If you switch to "hybrid" viewing of threads it makes it simple to follow who is responding to who

It splits the screen into the top portion which shows the tree and it's branches by title of post, much like you see here when not in "view all" mode.
While the bottom portion shows all the responses in ful, it should only be a matter of time before that portion of viewing is indented like it is here when reading all the posts in order.

I hope this helps.

We are actually discussing ways to either give new members a tutorial on how to navigate things or making some changes if the software allows it.

9. That is not a dumb question.

Forum's use various types of proprietary PHP based software systems. The one we are using may provide a 'kit' that might function similarly to DU, however, it may also incur a cost.

I personally have noticed the criticisms and complaints here, and I have started a discussion with the Admins & other moderators to find a solution.

...that would be a great thing! I hear there's someone over at JPR that's a fundraising guru just like Omaha Steve is here. "The Wizard of OS", I believe the poster's name is? Coincidence?

15. I'm used to posting on vBulletin

Some use the free stuff: http://www.forumup.com/

Caveat emptor though, it's a bit bare bones. It lets you add images automatically but for youtube you have to add the code to get them to display.

Here's two that use vBulletin. Lol, gaming forums.

And every forum I've gone to has a learning curve. So we'll get used to what we have. Though if it's customizable, maybe the defaults can get tweaked, or an "easy peasy" version can be added.

...especially with recent developments (regarding how welcome "we" will be after June 16th, and the "new and improved" JPR coming soon). I'm a member over there, but spend more time here. I have a feeling that will change, and soon. Hope to see all of you there.
