TX-28: Bernie Sanders endorses Jessica Cisneros, primary challenger to Henry Cuellar

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is wading into one of Texas’ most closely watched primary challenges, endorsing progressive candidate Jessica Cisneros who has mounted a bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress.

“This is the most important election in our lifetime and I’m proud there are so many candidates running for Congress who understand that real change comes from the bottom on up, not the top on down,” Sanders said in a statement.

Cisneros was one of nine candidates Sanders endorsed early Wednesday, in addition to incumbent Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Peter Welch of Vermont.

Some progressives had weighed in wondering why Sanders had not endorsed Cisneros earlier while she collected a number of high-profile endorsements, including from fellow presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren and U.S. Reps. Ayanna Pressley, D-Massachusetts, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York.

Justice Democrats, the progressive group famous for helping elect Ocasio-Cortez, also endorsed Cisernos last year.

Bernie backs pro-choice Dem over an anti-choice Dem. Are you with him?

The Mello thing wasn't pro-choice versus anti-choice. It was an anti-choice Dem versus an even worse Republican. That's the "party unity" that the Bernie bashers always talk about. I mean, you could argue we should just have not even tried and let the Republican win, I guess. But Bernie and Tom Perez didn't do that.

But this is a very clear-cut choice. Side with Bernie and the pro-choice candidate. Or against Bernie and for the anti-choice candidate. Which side are you on?

Do you have a clue what the local politics are like there? I do, I live in the state. You don't. Which is why I deeply disagree with these asinine outside interference campaigns if you don't have a clue one how local politics play.

Here in Texas we want to win. We don't give a flying rats ass about (to us) dumbass inter party feuds about purity. That doesn't come into play here at all. It's all local politics, and the crap I'm seeing expounded on here, none of that is relevant locally.

But hey, you do you. Endorse damaging an actual electable candidate with crap the majority of locals dislike to feed a national campaign. That's not how we win majorities. Which, just to be clear, is how we change things via legislation.

I used to live in TX, but not anymore, and I don't know local politics.

On paper, it looks like a centrist Dem in a safe blue district, kind of like an AOC situation. You are telling me that this is not actually the case based on the local political scene. Fair enough. If it's not safe blue, that indeed changes the equation.

But here's the thing. If you look at this thread, people are objecting not just to Bernie endorsing Cisneros, but also to Bernie helping Mello, another centrist Dem, against a Republican. That strikes me as absurd.

Bernie supporting a centrist Dem like Mello in a swing district is a good thing for the very same reason you give for supporting Cuellar: we need to win seats. In fact, it's even more clear-cut with Mello, because he was actually running against a Republican. It wasn't a question of do we run a centrist or a progressive, it was just do we want a Democrat, or do we just forfeit the seat to a Republican because the Dem isn't pure enough.

Bernie is getting attacked for that, right here in this thread.

50. Bernie is injecting himself into local politics for national gain.
Sat Feb 1, 2020, 03:27 AM
Feb 2020

With no regard as to the impact on the local races. That's a formula for disaster, for both Bernie and the races he's injecting himself into.

Yeah, sure, people who don't understand the local politics will rally behind his choices if they're his fans. Which does nothing to help the down ticket races to win. It just divides us more and ends up costing us seats. Valuable down tickets seats we desperately need to win. It's foolish and selfish politics for personal fame. I'm sorry, I cannot, and will not support such self destruction.

Giving Republicans an in, where they shouldn't have one is just asinine this cycle. No seat is safe enough to risk it this cycle. None. Let alone the local impact these foolish challenges have down ticket. Especially here in Texas where we're fighting so hard to win an uphill battle. It leaves me, a person whose spent my entire adult life here trying to flip this state, with a bitter "acid reflux" feeling in the back of my throat.

Like I said, you do you, but I'm going to do me here, where I matter. That means I'll fight like a freaking rabid honey badger to elect more Democrats here in Texas. No matter what obstacles keep being tossed in my face, or by what side said obstacles come from.

I just want to flip my state. I'll work on cleaning things up when we're not ruled by Republicans later. But, for now I'm only focused on the simple majority and who is most electable. We have to flip this state first to have a shot at change.

All politic is local. I wish our national politicians could just remember that one simple rule of thumb.
