Bernie Sanders on Socialism: People Would Be "Delighted" To Pay More In Taxes

This is not a good look.

Bernie Sanders on Socialism: People Would Be "Delighted" To Pay More In Taxes

Bernie Sanders said people would be "delighted" to pay more in taxes if it meant health care, education, and retirement security in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper following a speech he delivered defining democratic socialism.

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS (D-VT), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: In most countries around the world the level of income and wealth inequality which in the United States today is worse than in any time since the 1920s with three families owning more wealth than the bottom half of America. That level of income and wealth inequality is much less severe than it is right here in the United States.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN HOST: But as you know, the taxes in many of those countries are much higher than they are in individual and personal tax are much higher than they are in the United States.

SANDERS: Yeah, but I suspect that a lot of people in the country would be delighted to pay more in taxes if they had comprehensive health care as a human right. I live 50 miles away from the Canadian border. You go to the doctor any time you want. You don't take ought your wallet. You have heart surgery, you have a heart transplant and you come out of the hospital and it costs you nothing. Your kids in many countries around the world can go to the public colleges and universities tuition-free, wages in many cases are higher. So there is a tradeoff, but at the end of the day, I think, that most people will believe they will be better off when their kids have educational opportunities without out-of-pocket expenses and when they have healthcare as a human right and they have affordable housing, when they have decent retirement security, I think most Americans will understand that is a good deal.

He once said he wouldn’t mind paying higher taxes if he got something for it.

After I got done with the urge to strangle him, I said PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS!

His wife is from Germany and he used to brag about the child care and nice public transportation there.

They moved back to Germany to raise their three kids. He brags about the huge child care credits they now get.

The only way to fund his programs is by raising taxes significantly, including, more than likely, on the middle class. He has to somehow convince them that it would be worth the effort.

It's possible that it would be in the long run, but it's a pretty tough sell in the short term. I think he's more optimistic about the willingness of people to accept revolutionary change from their own personal financial perspectives than is warranted.

Sanders, however, is ignoring how difficult it will be to sell people on the idea.

Again, the ideas aren't the problem. Selling people on them and convincing them that the sacrifice is worth the effort is where the difficulty lies. Many people do not want to pay more in taxes regardless of the perceived or actual benefits. We can't even get people to adequately fund schools and infrastructure.

Saying everyone will just be thrilled about it is misunderstanding human nature at its most basic and Americans, in particular.

16. More Savings, More Benefits
Thu Jan 30, 2020, 03:52 PM
Jan 2020

If Medicare For All is established, most people will end up paying more in taxes, but they will have a net savings because M4A will replace expensive private health care and eliminate the costs of those private plans.

Also, people will get more benefits for less cost. No premiums, no deductibles, no co-pays, cheaper medicines/drugs.

So it is a canard that Bernie will cost us more. Taxes go up, but they replace private health insurance costs, and end up with a greater net savings. So, people will be paying less and getting more benefits.

I agree if/when we get to single payer and free college and basic security people will be happier.

But doing it in one step means people see the bill first and only a promise of “don’t worry we got this”. I think too many will reject that this year. If we still win I don’t see how we would keep the house and senate (if we win the senate)

Push for details and get accused of being a corporate stooge.

Reading the responses I don’t see any suggestions of how to win arguments on how to sell this. Just more “you’ll come out ahead in the end”.

If bernie is the nominee I’ll fight like hell for him, but I don’t know how to argue this effectively and so far I haven’t heard anything convincing from anyone else.
