Bernie Sanders Can Exploit Donald Trump's Weaknesses

Voters are sick of politicians, including Trump, saying they'll protect SS and Medicare, and then getting into office and proposing cuts. These are things voters care about, and Bernie's got the best unwavering record of fighting to defend and expand them all.

https://jacobinmag.com/2020/01/bernie-sanders-donald-trump-social-security-medicare-medicaid

Donald Trump has broken promises to leave Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid alone. This basic dishonesty leaves him vulnerable to attack — but only by Bernie Sanders, because Sanders has the longest and strongest record defending the exact programs Trump wants to cut.

In May 2015, when Donald Trump was polling at 5 percent in the Republican presidential primary, he told a reporter in Des Moines, Iowa, “I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican, and I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid.”

It’s easy to forget, but promising to leave benefits for seniors alone was part of Trump’s campaign message from the beginning. Things have changed. At the annual ruling-class summit in Davos, Switzerland, last week, a reporter asked Trump if “entitlement cuts” would “ever be on your plate.” Trump answered that “at some point they will be,” adding, “At the right time, we will take a look at that.”

10. Not in the real world, trump would destroy a very weak candidate like sanders
Thu Jan 30, 2020, 08:21 PM
Jan 2020

In addition to the well written 101 page memorandum with oppo on sanders with a 1000 pages of backup from the Clinton campaign trump has his own oppo file on sanders that would destroy such a weak and divisive candidate like sanders. Trump had a two foot thick book of oppo research on Sanders http://www.newsweek.com/myths-cost-democrats-presidential-election-521044

They ignored the fact that Sanders had not yet faced a real campaign against him. Clinton was in the delicate position of dealing with a large portion of voters who treated Sanders more like the Messiah than just another candidate. She was playing the long game—attacking Sanders strongly enough to win, but gently enough to avoid alienating his supporters. Given her overwhelming support from communities of color—for example, about 70 percent of African-American voters cast their ballot for her—Clinton had a firewall that would be difficult for Sanders to breach....

So what would have happened when Sanders hit a real opponent, someone who did not care about alienating the young college voters in his base? I have seen the opposition book assembled by Republicans for Sanders, and it was brutal. The Republicans would have torn him apart. And while Sanders supporters might delude themselves into believing that they could have defended him against all of this, there is a name for politicians who play defense all the time: losers....

The Republicans had at least four other damning Sanders videos (I don’t know what they showed), and the opposition research folder was almost 2-feet thick. (The section calling him a communist with connections to Castro alone would have cost him Florida.) In other words, the belief that Sanders would have walked into the White House based on polls taken before anyone really attacked him is a delusion built on a scaffolding of political ignorance.

sanders was such a weak primary candidate that the Clinton campaign did not use its oppo but trump would have fun destroying such a weak candidate like sanders

How The Russian Social Media Effort Boosted Bernie

There's plenty of evidence of the Russian effort to help Sanders, including documents compiled the Democratic staff on the House Intelligence Committee and an NBC News database of roughly 200,000 tweets traced to the Russian trolls.

Bernie, Jill Stein, etc. were just foils for the Russians against Hillary.

Also, no one ever seems to criticize Gary Johnson or Evan McMullen for taking anti-Trump votes from (mainly Republican anti-Trump votes in the suburbs that Clinton targeted, especially in McMullen’s case - the margin between Trump and Clinton in Utah was less than McMullen’s percentage there). And Johnson was easily the most successful of the third-party candidates overall.

And the more they attack someone, the more energized their base is. Which is what they want.

If they really wanted Sanders as the nominee (and I’m not convinced either way btw), then wouldnmt they be promoting him more as an adversary to Trump and his voters? Not a rhetorical question, seriously.

https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2020/jan/09/bernie-sanders/did-biden-laud-paul-ryan-proposal-cut-social-secur/

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — As a congressman in the 1990s, Bernie Sanders expressed an openness to making “adjustments” to the tax and benefit structure of Social Security. He also praised an overhaul of the social safety net program signed into law by President Ronald Reagan that reduced benefits and increased taxes on working families.

Sanders’ presidential campaign and allies have highlighted similar remarks by Joe Biden to attack the former vice president and make the explosive charge that Biden was an outspoken proponent of slashing the program.

I'm not saying that he would say that now...especially during a campaign. But if Bernie is going to bash Biden doing it (especially when Biden didn't) then Bernie's not looking in the mirror, is he?
