Democrats were his only hope of staying on as Speaker.
He very much feared that his Party would remove him, just like they did Kevin McCarthy. And the movement was afoot. He could have been gone today?
He knew he did not have the votes to stay on as Speaker if a vote was taken. He would either lose to a Democrat or another Republican.
He also knew that Democrats wanted a vote on the aid to Ukraine and Israel.
So he played the only card that was left him.
It had nothing to do with courage. It was about self-survival.
And the MAGA's can do nothing about it.
The most important thing is not that Donald Trump is found guilty.
It is that he has gone to trial at all.
Judge Juan Merchan has done a miraculous job bringing Trump to court. In the process, he may have saved American democracy.
Because, without justice for all, there can be no democracy. We should not minimize the great job that this Judge has done.
The justice system does not require a guilty verdict to work. It only requires a jury of your peers in a court of law.
This week, the justice system has worked.

Republicans may find themselves with a nominee that has been convicted, when they have their convention in July?
Yet, they keep on digging the hole.
With the recent proclamations of Bill Barr, Mitch McConnell, and Chris Sununu, one might assume that the Republican Party has gone all in on Donald Trump. It doesn't matter what happens between now and election day.
The Party has signed on.
Now, they have no choice but to defend his every crime and utterance.
They were once a Party. They are now a cult. They are accomplices. They are liars.

The root of the problem is that many Americans distrust politicians and see politics as entertainment.
They look at Trump like they look at their favorite wrestlers prancing around the ring. That's what they do. It is not a serious pursuit. They enjoy it.
They see Trump and his politics as unconnected to their lives.
This distrust comes from many years of jokes and ridicule about politicians. They cannot be trusted. They are what is wrong in Washington. To some degree, they may be right?
However, they are terribly misguided if they think it does not matter what type of government they live under. They are wrong to believe that all politicians are the same.
They are a cult but they don't think of themselves as a cult. They think of themselves more as "fans", like the followers of the Grateful Dead, that followed them across the country.
A big portion of these fans are from the younger generation, in my opinion. It's like a happening. They enjoy the shit that Trump dishes out.
FOX News has become the "National Enquirer" for Defendant Trump
It will come out in this trial of Trump the role that the National Enquirer played for Trump, the candidate, in 2016.
Not only were they printing negative stories about Hillary but they "killed" all the stories that might have been negative for Trump. Also, all the stories about him were to be positive.
How is this different than what FOX News is doing right now?
They report every negative story about Joe Biden and every story about Trump is positive. The more negative stories, about the charges against him, are not reported at all. They have replaced the role of the National Enquirer.
I wonder if Trump is paying them like he paid David Pecker?
"Persecuted victim" or "Serial criminal" "
I think a lot of his supporters believe that he is being persecuted because he has so many charges against him.
But the facts show otherwise.
He is a one-man crime wave. If there was ever a serial criminal, it is Donald Trump. He is facing 34 charges in this case and 88 charges in total against him. Many believe the Justice system is "piling on". They believe Donald Trump when he says he is being persecuted by Joe Biden and his Justice Dept. He wants it to be a political issue, rather than a criminal issue.
Perhaps the facts will speak louder than his lies this time around?
Will Trump find his "friendly" juror out of the hundreds being screened?
All it takes is one juror and Trump is off with a hung jury.
With his constant barrage of lies and propaganda, it will be difficult, in my opinion, to find an unpolluted jury.
Some in the right-wing radio land have been calling for Republicans to "con" their way on to the jury, so that Trump is not found guilty.
The question is, will the people get a "fair trial"?
Donald Trump is not looking for a fair trial - he is looking for a fixed jury.
"Your Honor, I am innocent. I have done nothing wrong!"
"He came running around the corner and ran into my knife nine times."
Maybe it is just me, but that is how silly Trump's arguments sound to me. His lies are never-ending.
