August 30, 1813, Fort Mims, Alabama (Mississippi Territory)
The Fort Mims massacre occurred on August 30 when a force of Red Sticks under Peter McQueen attacked a group of settlers and militia in Fort Mims.
At the start of the Creek Civil War, settlers north of Mobile particularly mixed blood Creeks from the lower towns began to take refuge in the stockades of Fort Mims. About 550, including 175 armed militia, were gathered at Fort Mims, located about 35 to 45 miles above Mobile on the eastern side of the Alabama River. Upon learning that Peter McQueen's party of Red Sticks was in Pensacola obtaining arms from the Spanish, Major Daniel Beasley and Captain Dixon Bailey led a disorganized force to intercept the Red Sticks. The resulting confrontation is known as the Battle of Burnt Corn.
Immediately after Burnt Corn, Peter McQueen gathered a party of about 800 to a 1000 warriors to strike at the mix-blood Creeks at Fort Mims. One of McQueen's strongest allies, William Weatherford, attempted to talk the Red Sticks from attacking because he feared for the lives of his family mambers who had taken refuge in the fort. Weatherford eventually agreed to take part in the attack with the hopes of preventing a slaughter and to seek vengeance on his personal enemy Capt. Dixon Bailey.

12 arrests made at St. Louis fast food protests
ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Police say 12 arrests were made Thursday at the fast food workers protests at Kiener Plaza.
The organizers of the nationwide protests demanded two things: a minimum wage increase from $7.35 per hour to $15 an hour because they say it is necessary to cover basic needs, and for the right to organize labor unions without the threat of retaliation from the billion dollar fast food industry.

Recycled Reads
Saint Louis County Library is excited to introduce Recycled Reads. The program takes surplus library materials and gives them another life by circulating them throughout the community, encouraging people to read while they wait. Displays will be set up at over 60 locations throughout St. Louis County where people typically spend time waiting including laundromats, hair/nail salons, health care providers, auto care shops and more. A complete list of Recycled Reads locations is below.
No library card will be required to borrow the materials. There are no fines or due dates. Individuals are asked to return the items whenever they’re finished to the original locale. The program will expand to additional sites throughout the county, be sure and check back for updates.

Insurer sues Schnucks, seeking to avoid paying for credit-card breach
The company that insures Schnuck Markets Inc. has filed a federal lawsuit against the chain, saying it won’t pay the potential tab for eight lawsuits that accuse the St. Louis grocer of failing to safeguard the payment card data of customers whose cards were hacked earlier this year.
Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., which filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in St. Louis on Aug. 14, seeks a judgment that frees it from any liability associated with the data breach, which affected an estimated 2.4 million cards used at Schnucks stores between December and late March of this year.
The insurance company claims it is only responsible for covering physical damage, not data, and only up to a certain amount. The amount is unclear because that information, considered proprietary, has been redacted from public copies of the lawsuit.
“The Liberty Mutual situation is disappointing, even surprising, as we never expected a lawsuit from our insurance company,” Schnucks said in a statement issued Tuesday. “We bought a policy and they are attempting to walk away from their obligations under that policy. We were proactive in obtaining that policy and we expect them to honor their commitment.”

St. Louis Named Among 'Best Cities For Cheapskates'
Kiplinger's says St. Louis is a great city for cheapskates - and insists we take that as a compliment.
The Gateway City ranks at number 9 on the Kiplinger compilation, and it's the biggest city in their top 10 (full list is below).
They say St. Louis' housing costs, at 27 percent below the national average, are what cemented our place on the list.
As a bonus: If you value museums and libraries, Kiplinger's says the concentration of libraries and museums in St. Louis beats that of New York City. We have 1.6 libraries and museums per 10,000 people while New York City has 1.3.

Mo. Democratic Party Selects New Chairman
The Democratic Party of Missouri has a new chairman.
On Saturday the state party committee picked long-time political strategist Roy Temple to replace Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders, who is stepping down after less than two years and says he may be interested in running for attorney general in 2016.
Even though Democrats have fared well as of late in state-wide elections, Republicans hold supermajorities in both the state House and Senate.
Though he won’t say what districts he believes are in play: “I’m not necessarily going to go through the list and give them warning."
