Jury finds in favor of BART officer in lawsuit filed by Oscar Grant's father.

A jury today found in favor of former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle in a federal civil trial filed by the father of a 22-year-old man fatally shot by Mehserle at an Oakland BART station in 2009.

The jury, in a verdict announced this afternoon, awarded no damages to Oscar Grant II, the father of Oscar Grant III who was fatally shot by Mehserle at the Fruitvale BART station in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2009.

Mehserle has said he meant to pull out his Taser stun gun to subdue the younger Grant, but accidentally pulled out his service pistol and shot him as he was lying face-down on the train platform.

Oscar Grant II, who has been serving a life sentence since before his son was born for a 1985 slaying in Oakland, sued Mehserle over the loss of the familial relationship between father and son.

Oh. My. God. Hollywood is remaking the Japanese horror movie "Audition".

We all knew that this day was coming. They ran out of small-time J-horror films to remake, so they're finally taking on the big bad of the genre. That would be Takashi Miike's gonzo horror classic Audition - long thought to be untouchable in Hollywood by fans and executives alike. Well guess what, people? Audition is about to be touched. It's about to be touched hard.

Deadline reports/warns that superproducer Mario Kassar has been put in charge of an English-language redo of Audition, bringing on filmmaker Richard Grey to write and direct. The claim is that this movie is based more on the 1997 novel by Ryu Murakami than the Miike adaptation of the same name.. But come on: you know that the ad campaign for this film is going to focus on the specific iconography that made the original Audition a horror classic. The rubber gloves. The wires. Kiri-kiri-kiri-kiri-kiri. Nightmare fuel, man.

In case you haven't seen Audition, make sure to watch it with your family! The film follows an aging widower/producer who has since retired from his work as a filmmaker. When his son convinces him that it's time to rejoin the dating pool, he does so by holding auditions for a non-existent new movie hoping that one of the women who comes by will wind up being his new wife. This search winds up going very, very wrong when a girl who is just a tad bit off goes out for the part. To be honest, the wave of creepy reality TV dating shows over the last few years remind me a whole lot of Audition, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the American version heavily emphasize the process of weeding out the girls our leading man (renamed Sam Davis) rejects in favor of his would-be ideal (now to be named named Evie Lawrence). Richard Gray is perhaps not a filmmaker whom most of you know by name. His next film is a crime drama called The Lookalike, with Community's Gillian Jacobs and Justin Long. His follow up project is set to be the dark comedy thriller Sugar Mountain with Jason Momoa and Cary Elwes - which sounds a lot like it could go straight-to-DVD. In other words, Gray is a guy coming from a modest genre background. He'll have the backing of Kassar, a former Carlco executive who produced First Blood, Total Recall, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Basic Instinct, Universal Soldier and Showgirls . This is a guy you want on your side.

With runoff over, Cochran says no to Voting Rights Act.

After Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi rebuffed his Tea Party challenger with the help of black Democratic voters, voting rights activists appealed to him with a question: Will you now help southern black voters by supporting a fix to the Voting Rights Act, in the wake of the Supreme Court decision gutting a key provision?

For now, the answer appears to be No, if a statement sent my way by a Cochran spokesman is any indication.

The Supreme Court decision nixed the requirement that certain states and localities with a history of voting discrimination submit election changes to the federal government. Since then voting rights advocates have pushed lawmakers to patch the hole with new legislation reviving that section, but Republicans haven’t budged, apparently because they think the current VRA does enough against discrimination, which advocates vehemently dispute.

Cochran’s reliance on black voters to survive has led voting rights advocates to ask him to become the first Republican Senator to support the fix. Steve Benen points out that it has zero GOP co-sponsors. As Rick Hasen notes, Cochran has only paid lip service to voting rights, and becoming the first GOP Senator to support it — in Mississippi, of all places — would be an important gesture.

National Republican leaders are toasting primary season as a smashing success over activist conservatives that has put the hard right on the ropes and given the Washington GOP the slate of candidates it wanted for 2014.

Those victories, however, have come at a staggering cost — and Republicans are painfully aware of the price of putting down an intraparty insurrection.

Establishment-aligned groups have already spent some $23 million on independent expenditures propping up favored House and Senate candidates in contentious primaries, according to a POLITICO review of Federal Election Commission records. By comparison, Republican nominees raised and spent that amount in the 2012 North Dakota, Indiana and Nevada Senate races combined — three of the most competitive campaigns fought that year.

The scope of the effort to suppress activist-backed candidates has been broader and costlier than is widely understood, covering at least 20 House and Senate primaries from North Carolina to California, and from coastal Mississippi to the outer tip of Long Island. The loose coalition of establishment forces encompasses two dozen advocacy groups, industry associations and super PACs that have raised and spent millions on behalf of Washington’s chosen candidates.

Report: Story of girl getting tossed from KFC hoax

The family initially told KFC the incident happened at the location on State and High streets, a claim backed by a Facebook post by Victoria's Victories, a page run by Teri Rials Bates, the girl's aunt that read: "Thank you for your support for Victoria. If you would like to file a complaint its the KFC on State Street in Jackson MS." That store is not in operation and has been closed for several years.

Victoria's Victories changed its story Friday, saying the State Street reference was a mistake. In it, Bates wrote: "Im the Aunt, I run her page and Im the one that miss quoted that it was State street when it was actually Woodrow Wilson. Dont blame the grandmother for my mistake!"

The story began going viral on June 12 when Victoria's Victories page posted: "Does this face look scary to you? Last week at KFC in Jackson MS this precious face was asked to leave because her face scared the other diners. I personally will never step foot in another KFC again and will be personally writing the CEO."

After it went viral, employees and managers at both Jackson locations have faced death threats, have had drinks thrown at them through the drive-thru window and have faced constant verbal harassment, the source confirmed.
