Little monsters...

A London man is lucky he didn't lose his leg after he was bitten by a venomous spider, resulting in an injury he described as "something from a horror film."

Jonathan Hogg told U.K. media he was bitten by the spider, believed to be a brown recluse, on an international Qatar Airways flight over the summer.

"The pain was like nothing I've been through in my life. By the time I got to hospital my leg was bursting open, there was pus, it was black," Hogg told reporters.

Some tips for Uber drivers (but not the cash kind)

The driver, who feared being dumped by Uber if I used her name, didn't put all the blame on the company. Public demand for rock-bottom prices, regardless of the consequences, also came in for a good shot.

"When I first started driving for Uber in Orange County, what struck me most — other than the fact that I was operating at a loss — was the customers. I felt that Uber has created a class of entitled customers who expect a limousine service for the price of a rickshaw in India. I would, of course, realize later on that that is just the American customer — we have been conditioned to develop unrealistic expectations."

The first driver I quoted in this column called ride sharing a domestic form of outsourcing. "We have quietly been buying cheap clothes and other products made by underpaid and overworked people overseas, while raising our expectations for even cheaper and better products," she said. "And now we are riding in cars owned and driven by underpaid Americans."

She, too, is looking for other work.

Some time back, I asked what DU was like in the last Presidential primary...

I was told (in so many words) it got ugly.

After witnessing this primary on DU (especially this past week for some reason), I'm finding the Presidential primaries on DU are more than ugly: they're scary!

My hope is that by the time the general election rolls around, most of these be fences will be mended. I find it hard to believe, though.

I guess weather patterns are still very difficult to predict past a week...

This prediction came out at the end of August (and appears to be way off). In southern California, we're well into the first week of September (as we all are) and we have another recording breaking week of high temps coming, because the jet stream positioned itself in such a way that allows the highs into the west (again), and the colder fronts move down into the mid-west (again). I just hope the jet stream positioning itself like this, won't affect the El Niño event California has been predicted to get. We really need rain.
