After I had three idiot kids run right through a stop sign on their bikes while I was on my way hmoe from classes on Monday afternoon, (Damn near ran into one of those little idiots) I felt moved to write the following letter to the editor. I have not sent it out yet, so I'd like your feedback on what I've written so far.
Now that the snow has melted and the rising temperatures have finally heralded the arrival of Spring in Wisconsin, children everywhere are breaking out their bicycles and hitting the streets. I would like to remind parents everywhere that now would be an excellent time to remind their children about the importance of obeying bicycle safety rules. In the past couple of weeks I have seen children riding their bikes on the wrong side of the road, blowing right through stop signs and red lights at intersections, and failing to signal their turns, resulting in a number of close calls that could just have easily ended in tragedy. I would encourage parents everywhere to remind their children of the rules of the road, such as riding on the right side of the road, and obeying all traffic signs and signals. By teaching and reinforcing these simple saftey rules, both children and adults alike can look forward to a fun and safe spring and summer this year.
BTW, people riding on the wrong side of the road is a BIG problem in my neck of the woods. I'm considering putting something in encouraging local Law enforcement to crack down on cyclists who violate traffic saftey laws.
