HOC Speaker Milliken takes swipe at govt!
Not too long ago Canadian MPs had unanimously decided to hold 130 sittings a year. However, for the second consecutive December, Stephen Harper forced prorogation of Parliament thus cutting down the number of sittings as well as leaving a large number of government bills introduced since January last year pending for approval.

“I am a Speaker and a neutral person. I am not supposed to comment on the second consecutive prorogation. But governments have the right to do it even if it is for the wrong reasons,” said Peter Milliken at an informal interaction with mediapersons at the Chandigarh Press Club. He was accompanied by his Liberal party colleague, the five-time MP Gurbax Malhi, who is also the first turbaned Sikh MP in Canadian parliament.

“Personally, I feel that legislative business should be gone through in the scheduled manner,” he added.
