The NDP has announced that Jack Layton will make an “announcement about his personal status and his immediate future as NDP leader” at 2pm in Toronto.

On edit:

Karl Belanger, Layton’s press secretary, said in an e-mail to Canwest News Service that Layton is not stepping down. He also said he was not running for Toronto mayor.

G&M is saying he's had a back injury recently, so maybe it's about surgery.

1. This doesn't sound good:
***Sources say the 59-year-old Layton, who has been leader for seven years, says his personal health is not good, but refused to say what it is exactly.

Layton had been complaining of a sore back from what he thought was a strained muscle from working out at the gym.

“It’s more than that,” a source told the Star.

Layton’s wife Olivia Chow, also a NDP MP, waged a successful battle against thyroid cancer and has been cancer-free since 2005.***

Cracked vertebra and so on, which could require surgery.

Update: CBC now reports that Layton will announce he has prostate cancer

3. So prostate cancer it is, then.
That sucks. I hope they caught it early, and that treatment will be successful.
