It happened last night and I am STILL angry
grrrrrr "Bible Answer Man" x(

My (republican) husband turned on "Bible Answer Man" during dinner last night.

Caller: "Is Obama a Christian?"

Host (I will not mention his name): (paraphrasing) Well we can't judge his heart but we can judge his actions and what he's said in the past, and based on that I don't believe that he holds traditional orthodox Christian opinions

Caller: "Well, I don't think he's a Christian"

:nuke:

I lost it. Right there at the dinner table. Demanded the radio be turned OFF.

And that's not the first time he's pissed me off. He had a guest on one day that made some sort of snarky comment about Al Gore being the Pope of Global Warming Theology or some such nonsense.

:nuke:

I was ashamed of flying into blind rage at dinner in front of my kids. And I apologized for it later. But I am so fed up with this crap.

1. The Republicans, using money from right-wing foundations, have
infiltrated various denominations, and although I have no proof, I believe that they have been funding these broadcasters and the construction of free-lance fundy megachurches. How else can a church go from zero to multi-million dollar campus in a year? They sprout up in exurban locations and provide instant one-stop, full-service communities for the local residents, who otherwise would have nothing but strip malls.

They play on the fact that most people in this country react positively to the word "Christian" but haven't received much religious education, so they're vulnerable to preachers and media personalities who spout all sorts of heartless, stupid right-wing nonsense and call it "Christian," which it obviously isn't, at least not if you've actually read and studied the Bible.

2. For sure
Witness the "Confessing Movement" going on in the major protestant denominations right now. They're purposefully trying to split up the major denominations along political lines.

It's all I can do to avoid "Christian" radio these days....Bible Answer Man/Propagandist Extraordinaire and Focus on the Family are especially egregious.

3. Who the heck is "Bible Answer Man"?
I swear, there's a whole fundie world out there that I am completely unaware of. And every time I see a glimpse of it, I get a little more scared.

4. The "Bible Answer Man"
sounds like he is a bit clueless as the the core values
of Christianity and the teachings of Christ.

" He's not a Christian"

Says who?

Please tell hubby to listen to that (*&*( by himself.

It's especially important to have a peaceful, as stress free
as possible environment at dinner time.
It's better for everyone's digestion and sanity.

Good luck!
:)

8. I don't know who the current "Bible Answer Man" is...
but wasn't the original guy the same one who wrote "The Kingdom of the Cults?"

I haven't thought of that show in years.

About 10-15 years ago, I remember seeing a series on the evils of rock music on his TV show. I had never heard of him and came upon the show by accident, but we couldn't stop laughing at the crap he was spouting about rock music.

12. Yep, Ol' John was always good for a laugh.
I missed his take on rock music, but found his view of Harry Potter most amusing!

I just posted this in another thread two minutes ago:

I have found that it helps me when I'm concerned about what other people do.

I have identified with the Incredible Hulk my whole life.

15. Lies in God's name aren't supposed to go down easy.
You were right. I'd like answer man to give an example of Obama not acting in a Christian way. I'll bet you $20 bucks he has to resort to his political stand on abortion or something similar. In terms of ACTIONS... who the heck does any better following Jesus?

I've known some who have done equally as well, but it doesn't get better in this world.

16. LOL!
I didn't notice the dates on the threads in this forum. I'm used to expecting them to be fast-moving, as the major forums are. Sorry about that.

17. What is a Christian, really?
Christ told us to love our enemies & turn the other cheek. God told us not to kill. Okay, with that in mind, a true follower of Christ would be a total pacifist. End of story.

18. I have a conservative "evangelical" friend who called BAM years ago
and got totally snowed because he was asking a question which was vaguely challenging. He made a recording of it. At least back in the 90's, the BAM guy was representing a particular sub-branch of conservative Christians, not even evangelicalism as a whole.

19. I'd like to know more about this "Confessing" movement
in the mainline denominations. Is this supposed to be a direct reference to Dietrich Bonhoffer and the confessing Lutheran church in Nazi Germany (which split from the Nazi-complicit Lutheran Church in WWII)? If so, I find the idea especially heinous to name a right-wing splinter program after such a man and historic church movement.
