"Have a Defiant Christmas"
That was the theme and parting wish from last Sunday's sermon.

Ask me anything, 'cause I don't know what to say. (not that I'll be able to answer, I was reading the Hymnal a good part of the time)

1. Defiant against consumerist Jesus-ignoring Christmas, or defiant against tolerant stores that say

'Happy holidays' instead of 'Merry Christmas' to you while you're maxing out your credit card buying cheap crap that's gonna break in the next four months as you try to spend your way to happiness, giving you a good excuse to say "Sorry, can't give to the poor this season, because I don't have any money" while you toss another 6 pounds of garbage into the bin from your McDonald's All Plastic Containers SuperSized Christmas Shitfest meal.

2. Hmm, the lines that I remember are,
"the defiance of a light in a dark place" and (quoting someone else) "If you're going to make money off our holiday at least have the decency to say 'Merry Christmas'"

3. Ya know, I don't give a rat's ass whether people say "Merry Christmas"
or "Happy Holidays" or "Curb your dog". There are real problems in the world. Real problems. Like war and poverty and hunger and on and on. I do like the "light in a dark place" line (and may steal it, quoting it as "as I recently read on the internet..."). But the Merry Christmas thing, I couldn't care less if I really, really tried.

4. Cal Thomas - of all people - agrees with you (and with me).
Edited on Sun Dec-14-08 12:54 AM by Rabrrrrrr
He wrote an op-ed piece three Christmases ago when the first "War on Christmas" bullshit was happening and Jesus Crispy shitbag preachers were getting bent out of shape that stores weren't saying "Merry Christmas".

I do not care if a mall employee wishes me a "Merry Christmas," or not, or if mall managers favor snowpersons over manger scenes, or erect trees they call "holiday" and not "Christmas." It isn't about their observing this event, giving us a "religious rush" and creating a false sense of security that culture is better than it is. It is about people who believe in this historic event observing it in a way that recalls the birth of the Savior of the world (not the savior of the bottom line): silently, wondrously and worshipfully.

I figure if Cal Thomas thinks it's nonsense, then it's nonsense, because this is normally the kind of trivial garbage that he gets his penis totally bent out of shape about.

Kind of like if Germany says not to go to war, you ought to listen.

That particular article by Thomas was a really good one. Every now and again, he manages to pull his head out of his ass long enough to actually write something scriptural and Jesus-y.

Here it is:
