The problem with using the presence of Al Qaeda in Iraq to jusitfy continued occupation
Bush said yesterday that he "presented intelligence that clearly establishes th connection" between al Qaeda and al Qaeda in Iraq. Does this mean that it was all worth it?
The fact that al Qaeda is now in Iraq is an admission of failure. What could be better evidence that the war in Iraq was a mistake than that? If we invaded Mexico as Richard Clarke believed would be as rational as invading Iraq in response to al Qaeda's attack on our country, and al Qaeda showed up there, that would hardly be a selling point as people might begin to ask, Mr. President, why not just attack them where they actually were to begin with.
What to do now that al Qaeda is in Iraq
First, we should learn from our mistakes. Never invade a country unrelated to a group you want to attack, it would be much easier to simply attack them where they are. Attacking them where they are would not destroy our credibility in the world, it would not increase world wide anti-Americanism that sets conditions for extremism to thrive. It is like your MD referring you to a surgeon for knee surgery to treat your emphysema and than saying it was necessary because your leg is now infected.
Second, perhaps some forces should remain in Iraq but they should be special op counter terrorist force not an invasion/police/occupation/rebiuld-your-country-while-your-leaders-are-on-vaction-because-it-is-too-hot force. We should move the rest to Afghanistan, home, and Pakistan where they should have been to begin with. Third, we should only do so after this President is removed from office and apologizes for being completely stupid on terrorism.
