39. I had a really freaky incident yesterday that "shows" just this happening:
I went to my local grocery store with my child and as I was standing in line at the checkout, the female cashier starts talking about Pope Benedict to the person who bags the groceries. She went on and on about how he is going to be wonderful and all the people who criticize him are not true to God. She said that the "so-called Catholics" who support abortion rights and gay rights etc. were going to have to accept that the church and world was going back to the ways of God. After listening to her basically "rant" about Catholics like me (that she clearly didn't feel were worth dirt) I had to speak up. I told her that I was Catholic and that I supported women's reproductive rights and that I thought that Pope Benedict was going to be awful and that it was his dogma and strict "interpretation" that was turning people like myself away from the church. I told her that I thought it was wrong to state that "people like me" needed to accept his interpretations or else be denied sacrament in Communion. This woman went off on me and even went so far as looking at my 5 year old and saying "so that is what you are going to teach her? - what kind of mother are you?" I couldn't believe this woman who was an employee of a store was stating such things and now including my child in the conversation. I told her absolutely - that I'm the kind of mother who will teach my daughter to marry her best friend that she loves, even if its a girl, and to have safe sex and use birthcontrol. This woman turned to someone and said "see, these typical liberals"...I shouted at her that she was out of line and how dare she start name calling and that my views of faith have absolutely nothing to do with my politics.

Needless to say, I was shaking as I walked out of their and just was weirded out by that exchange...I've been going to this store for years and never had something like that happen...I think the fundies are getting a little crazy if you ask me...

I think they are going to keep it up too...we have to speak our minds and stop these people from trying to impose their values and faith on the rest of us...
