In his first news conference minutes after becoming New Orleans' 70th chief executive, Mayor Mitch Landrieu told reporters that City Hall is working to open a staging area at Fort Pike to protect Lake Pontchartrain from a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

More information about the site, being set up in cooperation with St. Tammany Parish Kevin Davis' administration, will be available this afternoon, Landrieu said, adding that along with staff meetings this afternoon, he expects to meet with the city's Homeland Security staff for an update on the spill.
