NEW YORK -- Two 15-year-old boys were arraigned on charges they beat a homeless man with garbage can lids along several blocks and pelted him to death with bricks near a Brooklyn church.

The teenagers, Dashorn Washington and Jamel Robinson, were charged as adults with second-degree murder and weapons possession in Brooklyn criminal court on Friday.

Police said the attack began when the pair pulled 51-year-old William Pearson out of an abandoned car where he had been sleeping in the parking lot of a gas station in Brooklyn's East New York neighborhood at about 3 a.m. Thursday.

Police said the teenagers then repeatedly threw bricks at Pearson near St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church in the East New York section. A priest at the church found his beaten body and called 911.

Pearson, known in the neighborhood as "Billy," had lived on the streets around the church, which operates a soup kitchen. Church officials said he had been a regular at meals there.
