Soldier's dad confronts protesters, with love

Larry Cahill figured he could take one of two paths as he grieved over the death of his son, Army Capt. Joel Cahill.

Capt. Joel Cahill, 33, was a graduate of Papillion-La Vista High School and the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a 15-year military veteran.

The Papillion father could choose hate and rage, he said, or he could choose love. Cahill said it did not take long for him to decide which way he would go.

So a couple of days before his son's memorial service Saturday, Cahill knew how he would respond to followers of Fred Phelps, the Kansas-based pastor who protests at soldiers' funerals. Phelps contends that God is killing American soldiers because America accepts homosexuals.
