but then Blair is a slimy opportunist; he was all too willing to go before Parliament with those absurd assertions (that he knew to be false, because MI6 were telling him Iraq had no WMD capability). Mustn't jeapordise the 'special relationship', after all...the sad thing is that Blair probably actually thinks he's a statesman of consequence, and not just Bush's poodle.
And keeping the public cowed via intimidation and fear seems a less successful tactic in the UK thank it is in the US, in any case (witness for instance the widespread, although probably doomed, opposition to the proposed identity card and database scheme).
