DETROIT -- An undeniable electricity ran through Hart Plaza Monday morning in anticipation of celebrity and politician rolled into one: Barack Obama.

The Democratic presidential nominee drew thousands of supporters wearing pro-Obama T-shirts and bearing hope. Some even crossed the river to be part of what seemed like history in the making.

"Even though I'm Canadian and can't vote for him I believe he can help all of us," said Windsor retiree Patricia Quates, riding the tunnel bus to hear her hero speak. "I never believed I would ever see a black man become president.

"It's very inspirational."

A large showing of members from various unions came out under a hot sun to cheer for Obama during his Labour Day speech, which has historical ties to the Motor City

There had to be between 50 to 75 thousand there and it was electric, even though he didn't give a political stump speech, and asked the crowd to support the efforts in the Gulf coast, there was no doubt that labor and Detroit will turn out in large numbers this year. He's not losing MI, but that's still no excuse to get out there and save this area from the republicans.
