50. I'm going to point to these stats
When people (and yes, some of them are here on DU) claim the north is just as racist as the south. In every single state in NE, Obama won the white vote. And yes, while we do have ignoramuses around here, they aren't really all that common. Add in the fact that marriage equality is a reality in two states, recognized in a third (RI recognizes same-sex marriages performed in MA and CT) and civil unions in VT (and NH?) and New England is a pretty progressive place. We got rid of all the R's from NE in the House of Reps --- let's see if we can get rid of the R Governors in the next cycle!
