The background to that , apparently , was to get him to scrub his appeal against conviction. The reason for that is that it is believed that on appeal a miscarriage of justice would undoubtably have been the result due to evidence being withheld from the defence in the original trial. Granting the appeal itself had been delayed by one of the judges being sick and they urgently needed to preempt his return to health. Hilary may not have allowed for the fact that the Scottish Courts are no longer under the "control" of Westminster and so may not have foreseen that he would be set free anyway. Other than that anything subsequently said by Hils or Obama is probably just for public show.
