172. No... the transmission line was not connected to the residential feeds
What blew was a huge pipe, used to shuttle large amounts of gas around the Bay Area. It was not used to feed individual homes.

What made the homes go up was the radiant heat. That much gas burning that quickly will put out enough infrared radiation to torch anything nearby. The individual gas fires are just a result of the houses burning to the ground with their gas feeds still on.
