Bush repeats Iraq terror assertion despite 9-11 panel report

MacDill Air Force Base, Florida-AP -- President Bush is repeating his assertion that Saddam Hussein's Iraq had ties to terrorists -- even though the Nine-Eleven panel is casting doubt.
In a speech to troops at MacDill Air Force base, the president said Iraq "sheltered terrorist groups." He also noted it offered cash to families of suicide bombers who attacked Israel.

In a new report, the commission investigating the September eleventh attacks says it found "no credible evidence" linking Iraq and the al-Qaida terror network in attacks against America. It says Osama bin Laden met a top Iraqi official in 1994, but the contact apparently was never followed up.

On Monday, Vice President Cheney insisted Saddam had "long-established ties" to al-Qaida. But in a speech to a conservative think tank, he cited no specifics. Critics called it another example of the administration inflating the case against the ousted dictator.
