Exactly how conservative is America?

For all the caterwauling the extreme RW does about knowing what Americans think, want, or believe, I think they are going to be extremely surprised when they learn that many more people are tolerant and accepting of others than they estimate. I don't believe that the hardnosed rhetoric that reverberates in the conservative echo chambers is what is embraced by the majority of Americans. I think our fellow countrymen, by in large, have a finer sense of fairness, justice, and humanity than is assumed. I see that for an increasing number, appealing to their better natures, is working. I want to be optimistic about us as a people. We are collectively better than this cabal would present us to the world. Let's help our countrymen rise above the fear and trauma. We can make this election season an opportunity to heal our nation or we can help * and his minions destroy all we love and believe.

I hope this does not sound too naive. If we can't rise above our own prejudices and fears and help others to do this as well, then we are also doing our nation a disservice.
