Blame would deal with the rightness or wrongness of their actions. I'm just pointing out if they are acting in a confrontational manner, they surely will elicit confrontation; therefore they should not be surprised. Societal physics, let's call it.
Should they have been attacked? No. But then issuing a statement that they 'can't live with gays' is just stepping up that confrontational aspect. It's unwise unless they want this to escalate even more, therefore I have no sympathy for them as it takes two to play a game.
