They called themselves "slippies" because of the way they'd creep into people's houses. At least, that's according to "Helter Skelter" by Bugliosi, probably the best-written true crime book I've ever read.

I don't believe all the government conspiracy bullshit, at least as it pertains to the Manson family. They were a bunch of dope-addled sociopaths and borderlines who let a psycho define their personalities for them, because it was easier than thinking for themselves.

The Jonestown stuff, well, I saw some interesting info in a documentary about CIA involvement in the People's Temple. How an agent met with various members a few days before Rep. Ryan's fateful visit, which is what preceeded the mass suicides and murders.
