PBS has been starved for funds by this administration. I don't know about the Clinton years, but Bush I and Reagan were no great friends of either PBS or the arts.
I look on the plight of PBS as I do on the public schools: the more the government starves them for money, the more their critics can point to their perceived flaws, and it creates a vicious circle.
Corporate donations begin to look better in such a plight -- witness the number of schools and colleges accepting corporate money as they are starved of government funding.
No, it is not right. But it is. And I don't think we, the people, ought to abandon either public schools or public television.
