To a liberal/progressive cause, of course. Most charities will provide you with a small card that says something like "A donation has been made in your name that will greatly benefit the poor of our area" and you can give the card as a gift. Your local food bank can always use the money! But be sure it's not something run by the fundies, like the Salvation Army. If you do anything with the SA, do their Angel Tree- that way the gifts (which are usually necessities) go directly to the families in need instead of into the SA's coffers.

It doesn't have to be to a charity, though. WWF, the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, the ACLU, NARAL, Dean's DFA, and even the Dem Party (if you wish) would also be very good choices.

And if that just won't work for you, then buy them gufts from thrift stores or local artists you know are progressive. And even though I can't remember the name, there is also a women's group sellling beautiful handmade baskets from the women of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Some of the proceeds help the women in that are and the rest go to a children's fund.

Just think outside the box, and you can still find great gifts for the season- gifts that still help starve the beast!!

on edit- How could I have forgotten DU? Of course it would be great to make a donation to DU, too. Maybe we can get Skinner to print up those thank you cards!
