A friend called me today with news of White's death. He was broken-hearted. I understood.
Number 92 was a helluva player. I still remember White one-arming the mountainous Korey Stringer of the Minnesota Vikings onto the Metrodome turf like so much fluff...
But Reggie's worldview was pathetic. He was, like most fundies, hatefully blinded by dogma and superstition. His fans' refusal to face up to that is sad, but typical; sports worship seldom admits of subtlety.
The pity is that White's sports fame gave him a broader platform for his angry, blinkered medievalism. He was a marvelous athlete; he should have been seen and not heard.
