Where I most agree with you is this: that the best we can go with -- based on what we know now -- is "Vendetta against Plame" in the first reference (probably reduced to "Vendetta vs. Plame" to fit the head-count), then "Plame Vendetta" in all subsequent references.
(Vendetta vs. Plame counts 16 as compared to 21 for Vendetta against Plame. Am I, as I suspect, speaking one editor to another?)
