More on the Gore flights

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A plane loaded with 140 people evacuated from hurricane-devastated Louisiana arrived in Knoxville Saturday. Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale told 6 News 1,500 more are on the way.

Most of the people arriving Saturday were patients in New Orleans's Mercy Hospital. Others were rescued from other parts of the city. Some were rescued from their rooftops.

As they arrived in Knoxville, many said they're still thinking about the people that are still in New Orleans. One man gave a message to some of the rescue workers with the address of a 90-year-old woman he says is still stuck in her house. He said when he left, he told her the last thing he'd do was try to find some help for her.

One-by-one, the evacuees made their way off the plane. Some were well enough to walk, but others needed help. All of them appeared to be ill.

Doctors say most diabetes patients haven't had insulin or a shower in days.

"Their condition is, they are speaking and able to move," said Dr. Anderson Spicker, who was asked to fly on the plane by former Vice President Al Gore.
