Democrat Blanco elected Louisiana governor

She becomes first woman elected to state's highest office

(CNN) -- Democrat Kathleen Babineaux Blanco made history Saturday night as the first woman ever elected governor in Louisiana.

The Associated Press projected Blanco, 60, will defeat Republican Bobby Jindal.

With 93 percent of precincts reporting, Blanco, the state's lieutenant governor, had 52 percent to Jindal's 48 percent, the AP reported. Blanco had 680,418 votes, compared with 640,541 for Jindal
