1. Yeah the whole thing was a smokescreen.

The "support the troops" thing was basically - and trust me I don't like the "psychobabble" sound of this term but it fits - emotional blackmail. Let's not talk about the war when there's people dying. Course when one of the troops happens to have a different view on something than they do...oh hey...
