39. We've Been Here Before
Nixon was re-elected handily by people who had reason to suspect he wasn't all he claimed to be. When it became obvious that Nixon was a sneak and a criminal, all the people who voted for him got strangely, even eerily, quiet.

The Republicans in my family are usually as vocal about politics as they are about sports. Lately, however, you can hear a pin drop. Bush has really screwed up, and they know it. He inherited peace and prosperity and gave us the agony of a difficult, unnecessary war; and gave away the treasury to the rich. There's really no way to defend an administration that has failed the way Bush has failed.

Since Bush took office illegitimately, I've avoided political discussions inside the family. However, I made sure to publicize my opposition to the war, lest anyone accuse me of having been silent about it. I suspect that people who hold true Republican values are ashamed of George Bush and what the Republican party has endorsed in his administration.
