Shouldn't its adoption of the 10 commandments have saved it?

How about Charlemagne, he was the greatest of the Holy Roman Emperors in Europe, presiding over modern day France. And look how France is treated by our bible thumping leader. One would have thought that born again Christians would find heaven on earth in a country where Christianity and the 10 commandments had such close control of lives and events. Instead, they despise it.
