2. How Ganesh got an elephant's head

Once upon a time, Lord Shiva's wife, Parvati, wanted to take a bath. Her husband was not at home, so she made a boy out of sandalwood soap to guard the door. Lord Shiva came home, and the boy woulnd't let him in.

There was a fight, and Lord Shiva cut off the guard's head. Parvati got mad and insisted that the guard be re-animated, so Lord Shiva found a sleeping white elephant, cut off its head, and put it on Ganesh. Parvati also insisted that Ganesh be made a god of the highest rank, and so today Ganesh has an elephant head.
