Origin Displayed: English

The ancient roots of the Holloway family are in the Anglo-Saxon culture. The name Holloway comes from when the family lived as inhabitants at the hollow-way or holy way. Holloway is a topographic surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree. Habitation names form the other broad category of surnames that were derived from place-names.

Spelling variations include: Holloway, Hollway, Holoway, Hollaway and others.

First found in Somersetshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Dorothy Hollway settled in the Barbados in 1663; with William her husband; William Holloway settled in Maryland in 1775; Eadie Holloway settled with Elizabeth and Joe in Virginia in 1635.
