Nevertheless I know what you are experiencing. I am going through a phase of my life where sometimes I am given to periods of intense anger. What I try to do then is to calm down, take a few deep breaths and think over the situation in my head and how I'd like to make it better in an ideal world. I also listen to music -you mentioned you like Billy Joel, put on some of his more soothing or meaningful music. I usually find that the right type of music calms me down. Also think of the things in your life that bring you happiness -although if someone in your life who usually brings you happiness is the source of the anger, that may not help. But even if it is someone or something dear to you that is making you angry, think about the good qualities of that person or thing.

When I'm angry or pissed off, I sometimes do some creative writing (if I can). Or I write in my diary about the source of the anger and why I am so pissed off -just putting your feelings down on paper can be an immense help

If you are religious, then pray -that sometimes has worked for me.

And if someone has hurt you, remember this quote -OK admittedly I heard it from a rap song (Will Smith's remake of "Just the Two of Us") but I think it is a famous quote as well
"Let God deal with the things they do
Because hate in your heart will consume you too"
