8. I witnessed a horrible motorcycle/SUV collision just last Friday.
I was making a right turn off of a busy four lane road. There was a Ford Explorer making a left turn onto the busy road. As I was about half way through making my right turn the driver of the Explorer proceeded into the intersection. There must have been a motorcycle in my blind spot that the driver of the Explorer didn't see (I didn't know he was there either). I heard a crunch and looked in my rear view mirror and to my horror saw a riderless motorcycle impaled on the left front fender of the Explorer. I jumped out of my vehicle and saw the rider of the motorcycle lying on the other side of the Explorer. He must have gone right over the hood. I called 911. My son was with me and we were both really shaken up. The driver of the Explorer was at fault. This really scared me because in this situation I would have probably done the same thing. He started making his left turn as soon as it was clear I was turning onto the same side street. He should have waited until I was clear of the intersection, but I can see how I might have done the same thing. I will forever wait because I don't want to be the guy who turns in front of a motorcycle that I didn't see.
The rider was not wearing a helmet. I don't know for sure what his condition was after the ambulance took him. He was awake and aware of his surroundings after the collision. The whole incident scared the crap out of me.
