My guess is that being Jacob's replacement is a sucker's game, and that the MIB/WTFlocke turns out to be an equally compelling alternative. I think in some ways the MIB is going to wind up being the protagonist of the show.

I think the real fight is not going to be Jacob vs. the MIB, but Widmore vs. virtually everyone else.

I think that redemption is the theme of the day, and that about 5 beloved Losties are going to meet the reaper, but not everyone in the main timeline.

I really could not predict whether the timelines are going to merge, or whether people are going to have to choose which timeline to continue in. I could see real advantages to both.
