She works for the Finnish government. We met on a train just before midsummer holiday in 2008; she was heading out to her summer home (which seemed to be quite a common ownership in Finland). When I was buying my train ticket, the woman at the ticket counter kept referring to the weekend as the holy days. I was thrilled that the solstice was considered holy - and then I realized she was just mispronouncing holiday.

I work for a nonprofit here in the U.S. We get 10 days vacation (no bonus), 6 sick days, 6 personal days and 8 holidays. I've had better in my 35 year career but consider this okay in the evolved labor market. We had to give up MLK day because it was a national day of service and we had to stay open so people who wanted to volunteer could do so. Technically, we could take time off later but that comp time system never quite works out. I'm in a stretch of 5 weeks with extra weekend work - some weekends with work on both days - and when this stretch is over, I'll comp out one Monday in my schedule and then it's back to normal.
