Congressman Tells Area Residents That John Kerry Can Beat Bush at the Polls

Presidential hopeful John Kerry can unite the Democratic party and offer a strong voice for America's middle class, a U.S. congressman told area residents Saturday during a Rock Hill visit. U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., who has ties to the Rock Hill area, said he met with each Democratic presidential candidate and was most impressed with the U.S. Senator from Massachusetts.

"This great country cannot stand four more years of George W. Bush," Meeks told about 20 people during a free breakfast at Essie's Catering on Ebenezer Avenue. Democrats need a candidate who can unite the diverse party and beat Bush at the polls, he said. "John Kerry is the one person that can bring us together." Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran, understands international matters and the need for a strong military, Meeks said. The 59-year-old senator would push to get more money to local emergency workers to improve homeland security in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq, he said.
Among other highlights of Kerry's platform described by Meeks are:
• Pushing for tax cuts that benefit the middle class instead of wealthy Americans;
• Stopping U.S. job losses by deterring illegal immigrants and making selective trade agreements;
• Improving education by modernizing schools, giving more federal money to schools and offering job training for a variety of professions; and
• Negotiating with pharmaceutical firms to lower drug costs and creating a Medicare prescription drug plan.
