I can't get the context in a transcript. He could've said it in an off-hand remark, like "What do polls matter, you jerk?" type of remark, or an actual attempt to state a fact, which I highly doubt.

For all you Dean supporters saying how Kerry's character is so flawed because of this, I do not have to remind you the infamous Mr. Dean's tendency to make even more outrageous remarks. That is all.
