Lieberman to pick up endorsement of Florida Rep. Hastings

WASHINGTON --
Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Lieberman is poised to pick up the endorsement of Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings, according to sources.

Hastings will become the 14th lawmaker to endorse the Connecticut senator, with the announcement slated for Tuesday, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Lieberman has gotten the backing of his fellow Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, Sen. Thomas Carper of Delaware and 11 House members.

The 67-year-old Hastings, in his sixth term, is considering a run for the Senate seat being vacated by Bob Graham, whose own bid for the Democratic presidential nomination ended last month.

Lieberman, who as the vice presidential nominee in 2000 was popular in heavily Democratic south Florida, could help Hastings in his Senate bid while the congressman could boost the candidacy of the presidential candidate. Hastings represents the Democratic-rich 23rd Congressional District that includes parts of Fort Lauderdale.
