To be perfectly blunt about it, the guy is very lucky he wasn't hanged by the neck until he was dead, dead, dead.

We've killed others for less. Spying is spying, and it's not really salient if you're spying for an ally. It's likely that the US wants to discourage this kind of behavior, and Pollard serves as a warning to others. He's only, what 24 or so years into a life sentence? Still a young man, too--in his later fifties. I'm thinking they want him to have a little more snow on the rooftop before they show him any grace or favor.


He can play the "Israeli citizen" card all he wants, but he's only an Israeli because he applied for said citizenship after he got caught and renounced his US citizenship.

I don't think a death penalty sentence was appropriate for this guy, because he was stupid, easily led, and had that "EXODUS" mentality that was fostered by his handlers, but by the same token, he shouldn't have done what he did without being plainly aware of the consequences. And frankly, he was pretty damn stupid, too in how he went about doing what he did. He was one of those weirdos who lies about everything--he made up stories about himself, his parents, and his importance in the world--he had a need to be a big shot, I guess.

His name is mud to many who had to jump through a bunch of absurd and asinine security/classification hoops as a consequence of his actions. Boy, did he make getting a clearance for access to the stupidest crap a drill!
