Lieberman calls for unity in foreign policy
Advertisements [?]
The "staggering prospect" of civil war in Iraq demands that Democrats and Republicans unite on matters of foreign policy, despite the upcoming presidential election, U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., said Thursday.

<snip>

"We must recapture the spirit of bipartisanship and national purpose we achieved following the Sept. 11 attacks to do so. It is that important," Lieberman said, comparing the war on terror to the Cold War, which ended with the fall of global Communism.

"The best of our elected officials no longer saw each other as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans, fighting a common enemy. Our times demand from us that same spirit of surpassing bipartisanship in the war against terrorism. For Democrats, that does not mean that all debate about the war must stop," but, Lieberman said, "doing only that is not acceptable anymore."

Neither Bush’s nor Kerry’s campaigns responded to requests for comment on Lieberman’s speech.
