Its about party identification, not whether you have 'values' or whether you're 'Southern' or whether you 'speak their language.'

The South voted for F.D.R. FOUR FREAKIN' TIMES because he was a Democrat and they were Democrats. FDR had about as much in common with the average Southerner as a polar bear.

Now they'll vote for Republicans because they identify with that party. I got a sense of this while reading something in my paper the weekend before the election. They were talking about inter-family fueds over the election.

One woman said: "My husband is a die-hard Republican. George Bush could shoot his mother and he's still vote for him."

How in the world do you make inroads to people who think like this?

So when Rudy is the nominee in 2008, and the South still votes for a Northeastern, liberal, abortion-loving, gay-loving Republican, over a moderate Southern Democrat, you'll know that some the bridge between our party and specific regions of the country have been burned.

Some places we can't win. Some places we can.
